PRESENTER’S BIO:
Aram Hosie is a queer transman from Perth, Western Australia. Chair of the WA Gender Project, he has been involved in trans advocacy since commencing his own transition in 2006. Through his work with the WA Gender Project Aram contributed to the lobbying effort that saw the Australian Human Rights Commission conduct its ‘Sex Files Inquiry’, and worked with the Commission to get the Department of Foreign Affairs to relax its policy for amending the sex markers on Australian passports. In 2008 Aram was the first ever trans Patron of Perth Pride, a role he used to increase the visibility of sex and gender diverse folk and their needs in Western Australia. Aram currently represents trans health needs on the WA Aids Council’s Advisory Committee and has been involved with the Supreme Court action in Western Australia challenging the interpretation of WA’s Gender Reassignment laws. By day, Aram is the West Australian Manager of the Inspire Foundation, a youth mental health NGO. Previously he held senior policy roles within State Government, and he is currently completing a Masters in Politics and Policy.
ABSTRACT:
This workshop is designed to provide an opportunity for sex and gender diverse people and their allies to synthesise the discussions held throughout the conference into a cohesive whole and begin discussing and planning a way forward. The emphasis will be on how to translate words into action in the months following the conference, in particular in relation to setting up networks and processes around the country to advocate for the health needs of sex and gender diverse people.
