International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO)

The International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) is recognised in over 60 countries around the world on 17 May, the 1990 date when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

In Australia, although we’ve come a long way, unjust laws and unfriendly attitudes mean that discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people is still widespread.

Most LGBT people have to deal with homophobic or transphobic harassment or verbal abuse and many have been physically attacked just for being who they are. As a result of homophobia and discrimination, LGBT young people are more likely to start using drugs, self harm or attempt suicide.

LGBT people in Australia are still fighting for equal rights, like the right to get married, or the right to adopt children, and some churches, schools and institutions can still legally discriminate on the basis of sexuality.

This is why we need IDAHO. It’s a great opportunity to challenge homophobia and transphobia and to celebrate diversity. Anyone can get involved and any action, big or small, makes a difference.

Other Victorian activities

Local Government activity:

Badge-up municipality web-sites to show support for IDAHO and to allow easy access to same-sex and gender diverse specific services. Put motions before councils in this meeting cycle to show support for the International Day Against Homophobia, especially at the level of Government. Discuss homophobia and the role local government can play to address it, especially:

  • the delivery of GLBT inclusivity within LGA service delivery
  • LGA as a place where same-sex attracted and gender diverse people are free to celebrate alongside the broad community, and how LGAs can facilitate and enable this to occur
  • the linking role LGAs play in ensuring the State Government's Code of Sporting Conduct is put into practice at a local level in each municipality, especially given local government's role as "landlord" for local sporting facilities, and facilitator of local sporting facility committees of management.
  • an audit of best-practice around same-sex attracted and gender diverse community inclusion in municipality service delivery

Commit to following these discussions and positive affirmation action. Then more broadly, support and encourage community discussions leading to local sporting heroes being part of community posters for IDAHO 2010 "Speaking about Silence - Homophobia in Sports Community" - local people, not necessarily gay or lesbian, standing up to be in local posters affirming their "game plan" to challenge homophobia, locally (resources to be made available as digital posters which can be downloaded by individuals).

State Government activity:

  • raise the matter of IDAHO in State Parliament
  • implement the Sporting Code and raise awareness of the homophobia-linked aspects of it as part of IDAHO
  • Minister for Sport to actively become involved in IDAHO activities in Victoria
  • drop this Code into all 15,000 sporting organisations - Department of Sport
  • an audit of best-practice around same-sex attracted and gender diverse community inclusion in departmental service delivery and outcomes

Australian Sports Commission:

  • Assisting nationally focused sports to issue media releases for IDAHO and encourage their affiliates in Victoria, down to local level, to do the same.
  • Where available, link sporting identities to the local hero initiatives in local government areas

Workplaces, schools, universities and TAFEs, unions:

  • A range of activities are taking place across Victoria and these will be supported by the organisations behind IDAHO 2010 in Victoria and information will be uploaded to the StopHomophobiaToday website.
