International Appeal to Reject Transphobia and Respect Gender Identity
The National LGBT Health Alliance was among the first signatories of the International Appeal to Reject Transphobia and Respect Gender Identity. The appeal was launched as part of the 2009 commemorations of IDAHO - the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia - on May 17th.
On May 17th 1990 the World Health Organisations removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Transsexualism, however, remains. The appeal calls for the removal of this classification and the enforcement of measures to protect the human rights of trans people.
It was submitted to the United Nations, the World Health Organisations and national representatives participating at the Paris World Congress on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.
Organisers were a coalition of international organisations: the IDAHO Committee, ILGA, ARC International, TransgenderEurope, International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, REDLACTRANS, Mulabj and GenderDynamiX. Over 300 organisations and prominent individuals signed up to the appeal from around the world.
